Unlocks

Survive Carthage to unlock the Wolf, and Survive The Senate to unlock the Eagle. Beyond those beasts, Chained Beasts unlocks come in three types: beasts, beast variants with different stats and abilities, and cosmetics. Variants are earned by fighting with a beast to build up its XP.

What can you unlock in Chained Beasts?

You unlock beasts, beast variants and cosmetics. The full game has 8 beasts, and each one has variants that change its stats and abilities.

Unlock typeWhat you get
BeastsA new animal to start runs with, unlocked through run objectives such as Survive Carthage
Beast variantsA version of a beast with different stats and abilities, unlocked with that beast's XP
CosmeticsAppearance options for your beasts

Variants matter more than their name suggests. Wolf I deals extra damage with enemy body parts, while Wolf II earns gold when you pick them up, so the same beast can play quite differently. Compare them on the Chained Beasts characters page.

How do you unlock the Wolf in Chained Beasts?

Complete Survive Carthage. When the objective is done, the reward panel reads UNLOCKED THE WOLF with its starting effect: more dismemberments and +200% damage with enemy body parts.

Chained Beasts unlocks Wolf panel after Survive Carthage with +200% enemy body-part damage
The Survive Carthage objective sits above the UNLOCKED THE WOLF panel.

Carthage is the first of the game's three regions, so this is the earliest beast unlock you can aim for.

How do you unlock the Eagle in Chained Beasts?

Complete Survive The Senate. The reward panel reads UNLOCKED THE EAGLE with POWERFUL THROW AFTER MELEE KILLS.

The Survive The Senate objective sits above the UNLOCKED THE EAGLE panel.

The Senate comes after Carthage and Germania, so the Eagle takes a much longer run than the Wolf.

How do you unlock beast variants?

Pick the beast whose variants you want and take it into fights. Fighting with a beast earns it XP, and that XP unlocks its next variants.

  1. Choose the beast you want to level.
  2. Play runs with it; XP goes to the beast you fight with.
  3. Keep using it until its next variant unlocks.

Variants are numbered (Wolf I, Wolf II, and so on). Spreading your runs across every beast slows each one down, so stick with one beast when a particular variant is your goal.

Is there an achievement for unlocking every beast?

Yes. Bestiary asks you to unlock all beasts. Separate achievements, such as Free as a Wolf and Free as an Eagle, ask you to win a full run with each beast, so you need the beast unlocked before you can chase its win. The Chained Beasts trophy guide lists all of them.
